Their early years found Not Drowning, Waving transitioning from humble ambient pop beginnings to one of the world’s finest exponents of boundary-breaking rock steeped in world music influences. The albums follow a logical progression and evolution that depicts a group of potent minds charging ahead with a vision very much their own—a rarity in the emerging corporate rock environment of the time. Listening to these releases in sequence is akin to unfolding a map with unlimited and rewarding destinations.
Later, Not Drowning, Waving pursued two paths. Tabaran, arguably the group’s masterwork, saw it combining its ever-evolving trademark sound with the beauty of Papua, New Guinea’s musical traditions. The other direction involved the band situating its leanings within more accessible pop structures—something evidenced on their final proper studio effort Circus. Together, the albums represented two sides of the same gleaming coin. Several compilations and soundtracks also accompany this era.
